What is Foundations for Farming?

Foundations for Farming ( is a method of farming developed by Brian Oldrieve in Zimbabwe during the late 1970’s and 80s, after seeing how plants grew in nature. It glorifies God by making farmers good stewards of the land and provides sustainable profitability to future generations. In Genesis, it says, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ ...The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Genesis 1:26 and 2:15. God desires us to live lives for Him, as His stewards, and that includes the ground He has given us.

However, Foundations for Farming is more than just a technique of caring for the ground. It is about a heart change. Techniques alone will not change or solve Africa’s problems. Therefore, the focus of this program is Jesus as the foundation of all things. "For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 3:11. Our mission is to lay the true foundation for life and sustainable development that we might see an Africa set free to prosper in a genuine relationship with God.

Foundations for Farming then is an initiative for the preaching of the gospel, strengthening and planting churches, and extending the Kingdom of God with an emphasis on sustainable agriculture as a model for life transformation of individuals, communities, and nations.

“Whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

Our Heart:

  1. Jesus is the only foundation, the cornerstone of all of life. "For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Jesus is the focal point and fulcrum of history. "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Jesus is the foundation of Foundations for Farming.

  2. Since Jesus was sent to earth to reveal the Father to us, Foundations for Farming is about following Christ's perfect example and revealing the Creator through all that we do. "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

  3. Foundations for Farming teaches that out of the heart flow all the issues of life and that first God desires a heart filled with His Spirit.  "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" While we desire profitable farming, it must flow out of a heart walking in fellowship with God.

  4. Foundations for Farming recognizes God's grace in that we depend on the power of the Holy Spirit and seek His blessing in spite of our imperfect farming. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths."

  5. Foundations for Farming is about letting God live through us to His Glory. "Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."

Our Theology:

  1. We must be born again - Heart change is required. "Jesus answered him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.'"

  2. Giving to receive - We cannot take, without first giving. If you don’t put something in the ground, you will get nothing back. We must break the yoke of laziness and selfishness. "Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you."

  3. Faithfulness with little - We must practice good stewardship: “You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much.” If we are faithful with the first thing God gave Adam, the land, then God will bless us with those things which follow after.

  4. Do it all to the glory of God - “Whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Our Principles:

  1. ...on Time (Plan ahead, Prepare well, Start early, Never be late!)

  2. a High Standard (Do every operation and detail as well as we can, No shortcuts, Be honest and honourable in all we do!)

  3. ...with Minimum Wastage (Don’t waste time, soil, water, sunlight, seed, nutrients, labour, energy, opportunity etc.)

  4. ...with Joy (If you do these first three things faithfully without self-pity, complaining, blaming others, and making excuses, but rather with a THANKFUL HEART, God will take away any fear and hopelessness and give you the hope and joy, which is your strength.)

Our Hope for the World:

  1. Foundations for Farming allows everyone, including the poor, to produce high yields from the soil in a sustainable way that makes a profit.

  2. Allows us to see the blessing of God on our daily life.

  3. Allows us to glorify God and lift up Jesus to those around us in all we do.

  4. Allows us to feed our families.

  5. Allows us to have a surplus to sell for the feeding of our nation and to provide for the needs of our families (clothes, shelter, education, medical, etc.) and to buy the inputs for the next season.

  6. Allows us to have the means to help others who are in need.

  7. Allows us to live independently of the money lending system.

  8. Allows us to make profitable use of all the land God has given to us.

  9. Allows us to become a model for others so that they too may be free, rather than to be in need of aid.

  10. Allows us to strengthen the body of Christ so that the body helps those who are suffering and to spread the church into new areas.

  11. Allows us to bring unity to the Body of Christ and to make the church a shining light to others on how o run a God honoring business and to make a sustainable profit.

  12. Allows us to show our nation and our world how to rebuild Malawi and Africa.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”
